Carbon microelectrodes for spike recording and microiontophoresis

Our Carbostar series carbon fiber (CF) microelectrodes are made of 7 μm PAN-type graphite monofilament built in borosilicate glass sheathing that provides mechanical support and electrical insulation. They are excel- lent for extracellular potential or spike recordings as well as for electrochemical measurements in vitro or in vivo. These CF microelectrodes are manufactured by a unique dry fabrication method so their storage and shipping over great distances are safe. Iontophoresis barrels are self-filling which make their usage easy with plug and play simplicity. Multibarrel models are always manufactured freshly so allow about a 10-day lead time after placing the order. Their guaranteed shelf life is three months. A female socket mating with the gold- plated pin atop is provided in all shipments. The multibarrel models are also suitable for drug delivery by pres- sure ejection. Standard taper lengths is about 10 mm long. Custom modifications of the standard models are possible for an extra fee. Send in your sketch for a price quote.

Carbostar-1 recording carbon microelectrode

Single barrel carbon fiber electrode for extracellular recording and/or in vivo electro-chemistry. A 7 μm in diameter carbon fiber is galvanically attached to the industry standard pin atop and built in a 1.5 mm diameter borosilicate glass capillary tubing. On the other end, the standard carbon tip is conically shaped and protrudes from the glass insulation by 20 μm +/- 5 μm. This tip is optimized for extracellular recordings. Our ExAmp-20K spike amplifier provides an ultra-low noise recording through its microelectrode carrying headstage probe. Longer carbon tips may be required in electrochemical measurements or use our CFE- or CDE-series carbon microelectrode models. Please contact us for custom modifications if needed.

Carbostar-3 recording/iontophoresis combination microelectrode

Similar to our Carbostar-1 base model but combined with two iontophoresis glass capillary micropipettes. The carbon tip is optimized for extracellular recordings. Recommended when one or two compounds are to be tested on the firing rate of the recorded neuron or when track tracing or site marking dyes are to be ejected only. Our  nanoampere and BAB-501 microampere iontophoresis pumps are optimized for ejecting test compounds and site marking dyes or tracers, respectively. Kation’s ExAmp-20K spike amplifier provides an ultra- low noise recording through its microelectrode carrying headstage probe.

This full featured model allows extracellular recording and provides six ejection micropipettes for drug testing on neuronal firing, eject- ing balance current or site marking dye. The carbon tip is optimized for extracellular recordings. Our ExAmp-20K spike amplifier provides an ultra-low noise recording through its micro- electrode carrying headstage probe.
